INTRODUCTION -
"It's still the same old story,
a fight for love and glory,
a case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers,
AS TIME GOES BY"
The words of the song "As Time Goes By" say to me that
some things never change. But they do - people change, the
seasons change, our thoughts change and hopefully our hearts
change. Putting this book together was a labor of love and
nostalgia. Every recipe, every song, movie and radio program
brought back memories that I would get lost in for hours at
a time.
When I began listening to the women and men talk about their
memories of that era, I saw the changes that took place in
their lives living through WW II. The many unsung heroes -
women and men who sacrificed so much. The women who stayed
at home to work in factories and schools and raise the
children and make do with what was on hand. They, the women,
lost sons, daughters and husbands and yet never lost their
hearts. The countless YOUNG men/boys and women who left
their safe lives to travel thousands of miles from home to
face an enemy that sometimes looked just like them. They
suffered wounds for which there is no cure.
This book is dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of
brave, hardworking, dedicated women and men of the WW II
era. These are ordinary people who have done extraordinary
things. Don't forget them, learn from them and if they are
still in your families - listen to their stories - you will
be amazed by their glory.
Thank you for sharing your recipes, but most of all thank
you for sharing your stories. Thank you for the love and
devotion to your families and your country.
To all of you: "You must remember this, a kiss is still a
kiss, a sigh is just a sigh, the fundamental things apply,
AS TIME GOES BY."
